I spent 5 days in Copenhagen in Denmark! It was a good time, though I didn’t get out of the city and see more of Denmark, I definitely plan to do so the next time I visit.
Originally, I had planned to travel a bit around Scandinavia – but plans change, that’s one of the best parts about the flexibility I have with this trip! Well, it’s also an annoying part.
Copenhagen
I explored a good portion of the city – starting with a walking tour that I signed up for though my hostel. That was good fun – it was put on by the Politically Incorrect tour company and one of the biggest things they tell you is that if you’re offended it’s your own fault. As one person on the tour stated, “it’s funny but at the same time, now I feel like a bad person”.
In all honesty, the jokes weren’t that bad – they mainly poked fun at Sweden, various things that are fairly pointless to spend tax payer money on, and other things of that vein. I didn’t feel like there were things that crossed a line – but everyone’s line is different so it’s possible that others felt differently.
It was cool though to see some of the highlights of the city on the tour and the guide made sure to point out the best (and worse) places to eat and visit.
During the tour, I made friends with Cris, who is French. She and I ended up talking for a lot of the tour and decided to do another tour – a beer tour – that the company put on that afternoon. As some people probably know, I’m not a big beer drinker, but I decided why not. It was a fun tour, I got to learn a bit more about the area and there actually was one beer that we tasted that I liked – shockingly (not really) it was one that was more fruity. Oddly enough, that tour was basically all Americans. Cris was one of maybe 5 people on the tour that weren’t American. The others were from Australia and Mexico.
We rounded out our night with a Comedy show. The guide of our Beer Tour mentioned it at one of the stops and Cris and I decided why not? So we headed over there. It was honestly kinda odd. So it wasn’t standup (which we both thought it would be) but a live podcast type of show. The show was in English and is called “Why are you in Denmark” – it’s made up of a bunch of internationals that have found themselves living in Denmark. The first half consisted of the podcast hosts doing odd games like you would see on Saturday Night Live – neither Cris nor I really got the appeal and honestly a lot of the other people didn’t seem to either, but who knows. The second part was more fun. It was an actual taping of their podcast too which was interesting. But they got more into discussions and jokes about different things they (and the audience) have experienced since moving to Denmark – kind of a culture shock moment. There was a lot more laughter during this half, so that was good.
My second full day in Copenhagen was also spent with Cris. Originally we had wanted to do an escape room – but after looking at the prices we passed. (Seriously – what is up Denmark?! Why are escape rooms so expensive there?! You had to pay for the room and then also pay per person. So for two people it ended up being almost $100! If you had 4 people it would still be about $60 a person for the cheapest room we found! Not worth it!). So instead we actually spent most of the day at a cool board game cafe called Bastards Cafe where Cris taught me a bunch of different games since they didn’t have a lot of 2 player games I knew in the free section. It was a fun day that we rounded out with playing a Quiz game at my hostel before we separated.
My last full day was a bit of a right off. I last minute extended my stay and so I ended up having to switch dorm rooms, which is annoying but whatever. I also needed to get some house keeping things done – like laundry. The joy of long term travel is that you can’t just hoard all your dirty clothes until you get back home, you have to actually find time to wash them. It overall that was easy though time consuming. I also worked on my blog for a bit. I thought about wandering around and going to a flower festival that was happening at Tivoli Gardens but it was raining off and on all day so I just stayed inside.
I’ll be honest. I was in a bit of a funk in Denmark. I can’t really pinpoint what exactly put me in that funk, but I spent most of the time feeling off. It was noticeable enough that when it went away in Poland, it was commented on by my dad!
Travels to and from Denmark
As is typical – I don’t feel like I need to do an entire post for the stop overs on my way to the next country. Especially since I’ve been to Germany a couple of times – even on this trip!
I will say – the Ferry to and from Denmark was really cool. I took the bus both ways and it was nice to park on the Ferry and be able to get off the bus for a while. The way there was 45 minutes on the Ferry and the way back was 2 hours since I was headed to a different part of Germany.
I spent 2 nights in Berlin. I’d spent a couple days in Berlin back in 2018 and hit most of the touristy areas then, so this time I used my full day there to wander around. I ended up out at an old airport turned park. It was huge! And kinda weird. The runway was now used as a walk way and track for bikers. There were a variety of places set up throughout the park for kids, families, food, etc. but there were also a lot of the original infostructure there still which made for an interesting mix. I didn’t spend too much time there because I could tell that it was going to rain – so I just walked around a good portion of it. As I left and was near the original Airport building and hangers, it was interesting to see only some of it seemed to be repurposed and a lot of it still had the airport signage. Not sure when it got decommissioned, but it was cool to see.
After a not so easy night – one of the people in my dorm had very annoying allergies all night – I’m now on a Eurostar train to Poland! I’ll spend about a week here before heading to my next destination, wherever that might be.
That’s all for now!
